PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten — On Thursday July 16, 2015, the Attorney General of Curaçao, of Sint Maarten and of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba mr Guus Schram and the Chief Prosecutor mr Ton Maan, visited the prison of Sint Maarten in Pointe Blanche.
They were welcomed by the director of the prison, mr Rohan. One of the reasons of the visit was the critical report by the Law Enforcement Council about the security and safety in the prison.
In this report 15 recommendations were given for improvement. With the director were discussed, among other things, the concerns and challenges the prison is facing.
A tour of the prison was also part of the visit. Prison staff gave explanations about the rules and order in the prison, the daily course of affairs, the facilities, the new monitor system for electronic surveillance and the special program for young adults.
The Attorney General and the Chief Prosecutor were impressed by how the prison staff execute their duties under very difficult circumstances. The Attorney General and the Chief Prosecutor expressed their intention to pay a next working visit to the prison after several months.
