Philipsburg – The St. Maarten Lions Club launched its 45th Anniversary celebrations at Princess Port-de-Plaisance Resort & Casino last Saturday, with its annual hosting of the Lion Nelson van den Linde Senior Citizens Bash.
The Lions, assisted by the Leo’s Clubs, hosted more than 250 senior citizens from various senior homes and organizations throughout the island.
According to Lions Club President, Eldert Louisa; “the seniors were treated to a delicious salt fish breakfast with bush tea, a mouthwatering lunch and the appearance of a host of entertainers to keep them in high spirits”.
Amongst the performers were: DJ Ruby, Funk Gumbs and his Orchestra, various calypsonians such Fish da Mega Boss, Baker Jr, Mighty Brat, King Beau Beau, Mighty Chipman and The Fox.
“They all put on a fantastic show for our seniors for which the St. Maarten Lions Club is very grateful,” said Lion President Eldert, noting also that such an ensemble of the island’s top performers was evidence enough of respect and appreciation that was shown Saturday to the island’s seniors.
Lion Club President Eldert also thanked the M.C’s for the day, Lion Wally and Lion Selma for introducing the performers and keeping the smiles on the faces of the seniors, and also the organizing committee headed by Lion Henry Ellis for organizing this year’s annual event.
The Lion President reserved the highest praise for all Lions Club Past Presidents who were present at the function for their stellar work over the 45 years of the club’s existence.
Amongst the past presidents asked to come forward was club charter member, Lion Frank Arnell, who along with his colleagues, received a token of appreciation and personal words of thanks from the Lion President Eldert.
“We would not be able to have functions such as these, where we can see what happiness we can bring to our seniors and others in our community without the dedication and support that our past presidents have given over the years, and for that I want to thank you all,” said Lion Eldert.
He said he was using the occasion to mark the start of the 45th Anniversary of the St. Maarten Lions Club in which he intends to continue highlighting the work of the club over the years, and in particular the contributions made by the club’s past presidents.
“Saturday’s event on behalf of our seniors was highly successful thanks to the top class entertainment, the staff of Port-de-Plaisance, a host of sponsors, including, Sheriff Security, Divico, Manrique Capriles, St. Peters Pharmacy, Dutch Tours, L.C. Bell, TelEm Group and most of all because of the continued hard work and dedication of our own Lion members, their partners in service, other family members and Leos members,” said Lion president Louisa.
The annual senior event is named in honor of the late Lion Nelson van den Linde who came with the good idea to organize the senior citizen event many years ago.
