GREAT BAY, Sint Maarten (DCOMM) – The Honorable Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports Affairs Silveria Jacobs, was recently present for the graduation ceremony at the St. Dominic’s High School (SDHS).

The theme of the SDHS graduation was: “Some people drink from the fountain of knowledge, while others just gargle” – Robert Anthony.

Minister Jacobs during her speech congratulated the graduates on behalf of the Government of Sint Maarten and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports which continuously strives to meet the needs of the youth in these very important areas.

The Minister commended the school and its management and staff for all they’ve done over the past five years in preparing the graduates to meet the challenges they now face in the workplace as well as all forms of tertiary education here in Sint Maarten or abroad.

Parents also received special commendation for being a source of guidance, encouragement and love. The Minister acknowledged that parenting is the most important job in the world which never ends. They were also encouraged to stay involved with their now adult children, but to allow them the space to grow and become independent and productive citizens.

Minister Jacobs also tied these words to the theme in her advice to the graduates: “Discipline and determination will help you as you embark on the next leg of your journey, remember well when to drink, when to sip and when to gargle!

“Education is the most powerful tool with which we can change the world – Mandela. Use every opportunity before you so that you are also a part of that change!”

The Minister in closing reiterated that Sint Maarten needs each and every one of these young minds in order to truly grow.  Minister Jacobs also wished all a very blessed Christmas season and New Year as well as continued success.

Board president, English Coordinator of the Catholic Education Foundation as well as principal Giane Wilson de Weever, shared words of encouragement and congratulations to the graduates, parents and teachers.
