PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten – “There are many organizations on the island that are actively trying to make a difference for the overall improvement of Sint Maarten. Each has their own specialization, and objectives, many however go unrecognized and or get discouraged because of the lack of support,” Independent Member of Parliament (MP) Leona Marlin-Romeo said on Monday.
The St. Maarten Foundation for Psychologists & Orthopedagogen (SFPO) is a newly founded organization aimed to change the mind-set relating to the approach towards violence and anger in children who display hostile and self- destructive behavior.
The foundation has started a community minded project that targets all persons who intermingle with youths with self-destructive and behavioral problems.
Persons such as leaders, social workers, community police, psychologists and counsellors will all be trained in the new Non-Violence Resistance method within a two-year period.
Training in the new approach will also be given to the founders of the organization and the train the trainer method will be used.
Enlightened by the new approach and considering the escalating violence among the youth in Sint Maarten, Member of Parliament Leona Marlin-Romeo has recognized the SFPO organization as the receiver of the Give Back to the community donation for the month of March 2016.
The Member of Parliament is encouraging the business community to support the initiative by granting whatever assistance is needed to ensure that the project is realized.
