PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten – A letter was sent to the president of Parliament on Monday, April 26th, 2016 by the Member of Parliament Leona Marlin-Romeo querying the Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunication (Ministry TEATT), as stakeholder and contributor on the postponement of the SMART annual trade show.
The trade show attracts major wholesalers whose jobs are to sell the destination. This postponement has the full attention of the Member of Parliament considering that Tourism is the economic driving force of the island.
The SMART trade show is an annual event that should be competing with itself to be better and take more innovative measures in marketing Sint Maarten, stated Member of Parliament Leona Marlin-Romeo.
Several questions were posed including the financial loss of the country because of the postponement, the minister’s knowledge on the exact cause of the decision to postpone, the long term and short term plan of the Tourist Office, future plans of marketing the island in collaboration with the Harbor, Airport and SMART.
The Member of Parliament also queried for the overall marketing plan of the Ministry of TEATT, the joint agreement between Sint Maarten, Saint Martin and Anguilla and the status of the relocation of the Tourist Office. The Member of Parliament hopes to receive an answer within two weeks.
