PHILIPSBURG – Member of Parliament (MP) drs Rudolphe Samuel congratulated the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), its Board of Directors, management and staff.

“We, the people of the Caribbean/West Indies, are extremely proud of our 2016 domination of cricket by the West Indies U19, women and men’s teams. The Caribbean is celebrating the victories. The U19 started this journey with dethroning three-time champions India, and our very own Keacy Carty steering the team to this historical victory.

“The women continued the history-making trend as they played with determination during the entire tournament. Player of the match Hayley Matthew was brilliant in her execution to complete the West Indies cricket story. The men made history by being the only team to win the 20/20 World Cup twice and with a steady Samuel and an explosive Carlos Braithwaite the deal was sealed,” Samuel stated.

The importance of sports can be gauged by the way it helps in inculcating values such as dedication, discipline and responsibility in children and adults, while at the same time teaching them many relevant lessons.

The development of cricket on St. Maarten is well established with the Scotia Kiddie League and the Men and Women’s Leagues. “It is time to build a state-of-the-art facility in which these talents can develop, and that can ensure growth in the sport and simultaneously grow economic development in our country,” Samuel said.
