PHILIPSBURG – “Gender equality is not a woman’s issue, it is a human issue. It affects us all,” a release from the University of St. Martin’s (USM) School of Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning (SCELL) stated.
SCELL hosted the Gender Equality round table discussion on Saturday, June 4, at USM. The event, which was a collaboration with the Women Island Network WIN (founded by SCELL) was a success as most of the participants were eager to join the WIN network after the discussions held.
Minister of Education, Culture, Youth, and Sports Silveria Jacobs was among the guests. She expressed how much she enjoyed seeing women unify and take a stand. Director of SCELL Dr. Natasha Gittens stated that this round-table was a successful, yet another way USM is showcasing their educational social responsibility to educate the residents of St. Maarten.
The theme of the night was “Sisters United for Gender Equality” and focused on the Sustainable Development Goals of The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).
The night ended with the participants being pampered with gifts from Quamis Travel Management and L’Oréal and Neutrogena, which was complemented by a light reception. As an incentive and to continue the growth of WIN, the network will be offering free membership until July 30.
