Police investigate robberies

The Special Robbery Unit is presently investigating two armed robberies. One took place on Friday, August 5, at 9:15pm at a supermarket on Union Road. Two unknown and armed men, dressed completely in dark clothing, arrived on the scene on foot. One suspect went into the supermarket while the second suspect stood guard at the entrance. After robbing the supermarket the suspects walked towards a car in which the driver was sitting. This victim was also robbed of his money. After committing these robberies both suspects fled on foot.

The second robbery took place on Sunday, August 7, at 2:40pm in the parking lot of a popular hotel in Pointe Blanche. The victim stated that he had just arrived at the hotel after being dropped off by a friend. He was attacked by two unknown men, who were carrying handguns. The two suspects violently robbed the victim of his handbags containing personal items, tools and an undisclosed sum of cash. After committing this act both suspects drove away in an awaiting getaway vehicle.


Police officer injured on duty

Police arrested three men in connection with the ill-treatment of a police officer on duty. The incident took place on Saturday, August 6, on Rhine Road in the vicinity of Tantra Night Club. The officers were sent to that location in connection with a fight that had taken place. While on the scene, officers intervened in a fight among a group of men. This is when one of the officers was attacked from the back. As a result of the attack the officer suffered an injury to his left shoulder.

Immediately reinforcements were called in to assist with the situation. The suspects were all taken to the police station in Philipsburg where they remain in custody pending further investigation.

The officer was treated at the St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) for his injuries and is presently on medical leave. The investigation is ongoing.
