PHILIPSBURG – Last Saturday night, December 11, students of USM’s Hospitality and Tourism Management program hosted a big fundraising gala event, under the name: “The Sky is the Limit,” at the Rock House in Port-de-Plaisance.
The total planning, organizing and executing of the event was an integral part of the students’ BTEC Hospitality Management program. This internationally recognized and accredited program ensures that the starting professionals it delivers, not just know the relevant theories, but also can do the actual job.
At the event, Division Head of Hospitality Erwin Wolthuis explained to guests of the gala, that they were actually taking part in an exam, and that the grade of the students would be partly based on how the guests had experienced the event. Based on the standing ovation that the students received, it seems fair to conclude that they definitely aced that part of their exam.
Another great success was announced during the gala. Last week USM got the official confirmation that graduates of its BTEC Hospitality Management program, could enroll in the fast-track program of the Hotel school The Hague. This means that they can earn their European Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management in just two years at this prestigious institute after obtaining their degree at USM.
Wolthuis indicated that this was another milestone for the USM. “Becoming accredited was a great first step, but enabling our graduates to continue their studies at the Hotel school The Hague, which is ranked fifth in the world, proves that we are definitely on the right track!” he stated.
The USM Hospitality and Tourism Management students took this opportunity to thank all their sponsors, relatives and friends. Without these parties they would not have been able to carry out this major task and turn it into such a successful event.
