POND ISLAND – Acting Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transportation and Telecommunications (Ministry TEATT) Cornelius de Weever, says job fairs are stepping stones to employment opportunities, but also at the same time, an increase in economic activity for the country which trickles down throughout the community.
Another job fair will get underway on Tuesday, April 10 at the John Larmonie Center on the Pondfill. It opens at8.00am and runs until 5.00pm.
The type of jobs at this fair are construction and it’s related to the rebuilding of Sonesta Maho Beach Resort.
The construction job positions available are: Dry wall installer; mason; finish carpenter; flooring tile installer; aluminum window/door installer; roofer; welder; structural steel bender; electrician (high voltage); and electrician (low voltage).
Divi Little Bay Beach Resort just concluded a job fair over the weekend for tourism/hospitality jobs as the resort is set to partially reopen for business on May 1.
“Another opportunity presents itself and it’s the job fair on Tuesday by Sonesta Maho Beach Resort. The rebuilding of the resort as quickly as possible is good news for the economy. The construction phase itself will inject money into the economy from investments made into the hiring of persons who are paid wages, from building materials that can be purchased on the island etc.
“The job fair is a stepping stone for the unemployed to find employment during these very challenging times, and at the same time it generates economic activity. We look forward to Sonesta Maho’s return built back better and stronger at the end of the rebuilding phase.
“At the end of that track, another stepping stone would have been created. Transitioning for some from builder to hospitality service provider.
“The rebuilding, renovations and renewal process of hotel properties will benefit the overall image of the country as a tourist’s destination in the long-run as I pointed out before. Some properties within our hotel stock needed to be renovated and now is the time to do so.
“The return of the Sonesta Maho Group will be a significant development for the national economy once construction activities have been completed. It will result in an increase in airlift into the country where we will see more tourists returning to the destination.
“On Tuesday, make use of the employment opportunities that are being provided in the construction field as it will be a plus for our economy,” Minister Cornelius de Weever said on Monday.
