PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten — In efforts to restore a sense of unity back into our community, especially after the hurricane season we had last year, the Sint Maarten South Leo’s Club organized a free Walk-a-Thon event on September 23rd, 2018.

This initiative was brought about by the members of this community service club; because they yearned for the sense of unity they felt right after hurricane Irma last September.

Being the first project of their calendar year, the club wanted to “start off with a bang” organizing an activity that keeps the spirit of ‘unity in our community’.

With a group of approximately 80 participants, the morning started with a great Zumba warm-up session led by Mr. Leary Hall at no charge as he too wanted to support and promote this cause.

The walk started at the Lions Civic Centre in Sucker Garden and participants made their way down the Sucker Garden Road, turned onto the Walter Nisbeth Road, Front Street and the Board Walk before going on the final stretch down  the Emma Plein where they made their way back to the Lions Civic Centre.

Upon their return participants were met with breakfast and bush tea which was catered by Mr. Alphonso Blijden.

During the walk there was a Leo water stop at the end of the Walter Nisbeth Road courtesy, of FIGI through ILTT, as well as a water stop on the Board Walk at the Lazy Lizzard courtesy of Mr. Nikil Kukreja. Mr. Kukreja heard our club promoting the event on the radio and contacted the Sint Maarten Lions club to offer his assistance by providing refreshments at his restaurant, Lazy Lizzard, on the Board Walk.

The event also caught the attention of 2 entities, Meadowlands BV and All Waste in Place, who happily contributed to our club. The Sint Maarten Lions Club as well as the Alpha Leo Club (age 12-18) for supporting our event through participation and providing extra support where needed.

The Sint Maarten South Leo Club is very thankful to all the people that came out and participated in our walk-a-thon, Mr. Leary Hall for providing a great Zumba warm-up, Mr. Alphonso Blijden for catering breakfast, Mr. Nikil Kukreja for providing refreshments on the Board Walk, Fiji water for donating water for the event, Meadowlands BV and All Waste In Place for their contributions towards the club and ensuring our success in bringing Unity back into our CommUNITY.
