CAYHILL, Sint Maarten — St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) in partnership with Health City Caymans Islands, CayHill Pharmacy and the Windward Islands Medical Association (WIMA) hosted a Cardiology symposium as a commemoration for parting Cardiologist Dr. Meredith Sedney.
Dr. Sedney was key in the development of the Cardiology department within SMMC and after eight years of her service to the hospital and patients on St. Maarten, Saba & St. Eustatius she has formally retired.
The event was deemed a great success with around 100 participants attending from various organizations on the island. Attendees spent a full day at the American University of the Caribbean, School of Medicine learning about the latest in Cardiology developments and issues on St Maarten.
The symposium aimed at bringing together medical professionals to share and educate on cardiovascular care through education, research promotion, development and application of standards and guidelines.
Lectures were delivered by outstanding speakers from St. Maarten, Curacao and the Caymans Islands. These lectures provided a comprehensive state-of-the-art update of the clinical uses of various techniques in the diagnosis, prognosis, and management of common heart diseases.
Dr. Sedney stated; “Cardiologic care in St. Maarten started here at SMMC in 2011. Within 8 years, a sufficiently stable and competent department of Cardiology was developed, providing comprehensive care in the area of Cardiology for our patients on St. Maarten and the surrounding islands. I can confidently say with the enthusiasm and dedication of my colleagues I leave the SMMC knowing that we have an innovative department of Cardiology proving quality care to our patients, under the care of Dr Emiko Bird-Lake.”
Initial feedback on the symposium has been extremely positive. The cardiology symposium provided a unique learning experience delivered in an open, supportive, enjoyable and friendly atmosphere.
