Philipsburg, Sint Maarten — The St. Maarten National Basketball Association (SXMNBA) on Saturday January 14, 2023 kicked off the opening of the first ever District Business Basketball Tournament at the L.B. Scott Sports Auditorium. In addition to thrilling matchups, with teams showing off their skills and athleticism, there were a variety of other activities and entertainment for attendees to enjoy, including concession stands, raffles, dominos, and performances by local artists Simpletune and Michael Parris. The event was a great success and the teams would like to thank all the fans and community members who came out to support them and encourages them to keep coming out and support the teams at the next games.

In the Finals on Wednesday January 25, 2023 the undefeated Buccaneers Beach Bar/Computech (TEAM MOTORWORLD) faced off against the Philipsburg & Maho Pharmacy (TEAM CARIBTRANS) in a high-energy matchup. TEAM MOTORWORLD were led by top scorer Shulmaril Blijden who put up 19 points assisted by Widnor Mauvais with 15 points. The team played with a strong defense and solid team play, which helped them to secure a 72-64 victory over TEAM CARIBTRANS and take home the $1,000 Cash Prize. TEAM CARIBTRANS top scorer Oriel Sainvil contributed 15 points assisted by Hector Sanchez with 9 points but it wasn’t enough to win the game.
In the third-place game of the night, Intermar Shipping took on the Central Mix Concrete/Zhaveri Jewelry and Luxury in a closely contested battle. The Central Mix Concrete/Zhaveri Jewelry and Luxury were led by top scorer Elehandro Fleming who contributed 16 points assisted by Leorgino Kirnon & Tunc Malik with 15 points each., Central Mix Concrete/Zhaveri Jewelry and Luxury played with a solid defense and strong teamwork, which helped them secure the 85-77 victory over Intermar Shipping. Intermar Shipping top scorer Alain Duzant who also was the tournament leading scorer averaging 25.4 points had once again a great performance with 27 points assisted by Keon Jack with 21 points, but it wasn’t enough to take the win. Overall, it was a great night of basketball with two extremely exciting and hard-fought games.
