Sports Department Hosts 2nd Annual Open House

PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten – Saturday, September 12, 2015 saw a great turn out of Sports Organizations, Healthy Lifestyle options and Foundations at the 2nd Annual Sports Open House at the Raoul Illidge Sports Complex.  This year, in contrast to the previous year, not only focused on what the various Sports Organizations had to offer in terms of trainings, competitions, tournaments and fitness options, but also Healthy Living options, which look at healthy eating, drinking and supplements.

In light of the turn out the Department of Sports would first like to thank the Honorable Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports, Rita Bourne-Gumbs; the Honorable Minister of Health, Social Development and Labour, Rafael Boasman; Honorable members of Parliament MP Silveria Jacobs, MP Cornelius de Weever and MP Leona Marlin-Romeo.

“We would also like to thank the Sint Maarten Sports Federation, which collaborated with the Department on this endeavor and the National Sports Institute which has been newly introduced as the executing arm of government as it pertains to sports and the various Sports Organizations who participated in the event.

They are as follows: SXM Volleyball Association (SIMVA); SXM Amateur Athletic Association (SMAAA); SXM Boxing Federation” (SMBF);  SXM Basketball Federation (SMBF); Soualiga Youth Basketball Association (SYBA); Walichi  Girls Basketball Association; SXM Body Building & Fitness Association (SMBBFA); SXM Cycling Association (SMCA); SXM Cricket Association (SMCA); SXM Soccer Association (SMSA); Special Olympics SXM (SOSM); SXM Netball Association (SMNA); SXM Judo Federation (SMJF); SXM Baseball Association (SMBA); SXM Pony Baseball & Softball Association (SMPBSA); SXM Little league Association (SMLLA); SXM Tennis Federation (SMTF); SXM Aquatic Federation ( SMAF); Carib Swim Association; Sharks Swim Association; SXM Triathlon Fed (STF); SXM Racing Association (SMRA); SXM Kick Boxing Association (SKBA); SXM Domino Federation (SMDF). SXM Chess Association (SMCA). Also on hand were Healthy Lifestyle companies: Ardy’s Life and Sweetie Pops Epicurean Icery and Service Foundations: Turning Point and the Rotary Club  ”

The expectation of the Sports Open House is to give the different entities the opportunity to showcase what they have to offer to the general public, which should encourage healthy living and participation in Sports and Recreation on the Island.

The Department of Sports is extending, once again, an invitation to the various sports organizations and healthy living businesses and companies to attend the 2016 Sports Open House.

“We look forward to this endeavor becoming even bigger and better in 2016, with new organizations, including gyms and other health related entities so that the Sint Maarten community can continue to learn more about all there is to partake in competitively and recreationally concerning sports and health fitness. Our aim is to have an informed and active community on the island.”
