Churches match and motorcade to protest crime and violence

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis, December 17, 2015 A public match organized by the members of the Nevis Christian Council and Nevis Evangelical Association will be held today, Thursday, December 17,2015 at 1.00 p.m in Charlestown.

The match commences at Nevis Cultural Centre opposite Catholic Church and continues through Charlestown. The match will end at E.T. Willet Park.

Persons are encouraged to have placards bearing statements in protest against violent behaviour in support of wholesome behaviour and a spirit of peace and goodwill.

According to the Chair of the Nevis Christian Council Pastor, Telford Matthew who is also the Superintendent of Methodist Church, Nevis Circuit, the anti-crime week of activities were held after church leaders convened an emergency meeting on Wednesday, December 2,2015. The meeting was held  at the Methodist Secretariat, Charlestown and attended by representatives from various churches, Nevis Island Administration, the Bar Association, the Chamber of Commerce, the Department of Education and the Royal St. Kitts and Nevis Police Force

Also planned by Christian leaders is an island wide motorcade on Saturday, December 19, 2015. The motorcade will being at 6.30 a.m from Samuel Hunkin’s Drive at the Bay Front and continue through Jessups with 20 stops along the way back to the Samuel Hunkins Drive.

The stops are as follows: Jessups Gas Station, Cotton Ground Community Centre, Fountain (by Trevor shop), Entrance by Weslyan Holiness church, Mount Lily (Camps Gas Station), Bricklin (Dicks Bar), Butlers (Sergeant Shop), Top of Zion, Market Shop, Rawlins, Cole Hill (Pancho shop), Brown Pasture, Church Ground Hill, Cherry Garden (Hard Court), Top of Government Road, Big Rock (Craddock Road), Back to Samuel Hunkins Drive.

At each stop a Pastor, Minister, Priest or church representative will offer prayer or a brief word after reading a passage of scripture.  There will be appropriate music and persons are urged to have placards and posters.

On Wednesday December 16,2015, a day of Fast and Prayer was held.  The churches were called upon to “Fast and pray” throughout the day.  Prayers were held in every church building on the island from 7.00 p.m to 9.00 p.m.
