PHILIPSBURG – The University of St. Martin’s (USM) School of Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning (SCELL), and TelEm’s Fiber Optic Training Conference commenced on Tuesday, April 5, and is a big success.

The training established a partnership between TelEm and USM. SCELL was the department that planned, organized and orchestrated the successful training opportunity. In attendance at the opening were members of the USM Board: President Valerie Giterson-Pantophlet, Vice President Wycliffe Smith, and Marcella Henry. TelEm representatives included: Chief Financial Officer of TelEm Helma Etnel, Human Resources Manager Shadira Lont, and members of the USM Management Team: President of USM Dr. Francio Guadeloupe and SCELL Director Dr. Natasha J. Gittens.

The training for FTTx for Installers and Technicians filled quickly with no available seats currently open.  The four-day course focuses on the skills required to install, test, and troubleshoot PON and active Ethernet FTTx systems according to ITU, IEEE, and SCTE standards. Students will perform bidirectional testing, WDM testing, and splitter testing.

FTTx OSP Design will be held on April 11, 12 and 13, from 7:30am to 5:00pm. The three-day training will allow attendees to create their own FTTx network designs in classroom breakout sessions, applying the learned objectives to distributed split, centralized split, home run, and point-to-point systems.

SCELL will be hosting two additional Installer and Technician trainings. The first training is scheduled for April 19-22. The cost US $2,500, and registration deadline is April 18.  The second training will be held May 10-13. The cost is US $2,500, and registration deadline is May 9.
