The Special Robbery Unit is presently investigating an armed robbery, which took place on Friday, May 6, at 12:50pm at the Sport Gallery shoe store located opposite the last bus stop on Back Street.

An unknown man wearing a motorcycle helmet, armed with a pistol stormed into the establishment with intention to commit a robbery.

The Checkmate security guard on duty saw what was happening, and confronted the suspect. However, the suspect resisted and struck the guard on the back of his head with the weapon.

The altercation between the security guard and suspect resulted in the security guard managing to disarm the suspect.

The robbery attempt being unsuccessful, the suspect fled the scene by jumping on to a scooter with another suspect that was waiting on him.

The suspects fled the scene, however, information regarding the suspects were immediately given to the Emergency Dispatch, who sent police patrols in the direction of Cole Bay where the suspects had been seen.

Patrols chased the suspects through the Cole Bay area, however, the suspects managed to escape leaving the scooter behind.

Several items involved in this case were confiscated by the Special Robbery Unit for further investigation.

Man stabbed at the entrance of Le Grand Marché in Cul-de-Sac

The Detective Department is presently investigating a stabbing, which took place on Friday, May 6, at approximately 4:45pm at the entrance of Le Grand Marché in Cul-de-Sac.

The victim stated that he was about to enter the establishment to do some shopping, and was unexpectedly attacked by an unknown man, who was standing outside.

The victim was stabbed three times in his back with an ice pick. The victim was treated on the scene by paramedics and then taken to the St. Maarten Medical Center for further treatment.

The suspect, who turned out to be a mental patient, and well-known to police, was arrested on the scene and taken to the Police Station.

The ice pick used in this case was also confiscated for further investigation.
