Philipsburg — In recognition of International Coastal Cleanup Day slated for September 17th, 2016; Miss Mature Carnival Queen 2016 Norrisa Anatol organized a cleanup on Sunday 11th September, 2016. The Mullet Bay Beach and the Fresh Water Pond Mangroves in Zagersgut where the designated spots for the cleanup. Though the turnout of volunteers was not that great; those that attended managed to collect over 20 bags of garbage from both locations.
In addition to that, Anatol carried out an awareness where she distributed garbage bags to beach goers and encouraged them to dispose their trash properly before leaving the beach. The cleanup took a different route when tourists joined in and assisted with the cleanup.
Anatol extends profound thanks to all those who came out and assisted in the cleanup, Team Rissa, Laura Bijnsdrop of EPIC Foundation for donating the gloves and garbage bags, SXM Promotionz for designing the event’s flyer, Kenrick Housen of Carl N Sons for donating sandwiches, Heavenly Water for donating bottles of water and Charles Rollan for donating cases of juice.
“The quality of life for us, our visitors, and our future generations, are all depending on how we treat our environment. To keep our island clean, green, and pristine, if you see trash on the floor, pick it up, and dispose it in a proper trash container. I challenge our teachers and parents to continue educating our children on the importance of keeping their surroundings clean. Let us conduct more cleanup activities and remind ourselves not to litter so that our island can maintain its name; PARADISE,” Anatol concluded.
