Great Bay, Sint. Maarten — Recently appointed Minister of Justice, Cornelius De Weever during his working visit to Curacao for the twice yearly Justice Ministerial Meeting between all the Justice Ministers of the Dutch Caribbean islands was also able to pay a visit to the St. Maarten inmates.
Minister De Weever was accompanied by Minister of Justice of Curacao, Mr. Quincy Girigorie to the Sera Fortuno Prison where he met with the prisoners of St. Maarten, whom were transferred after Hurricane Irma. “We discussed their concerns and challenges, and I made a list of their concerns,” said Minister De Weever.
These concerns will be presented in a report to the prison managers and the answers will be communicated back to the prisoners. The Minister was also given a tour of the surveillance system, rooms as well as a presentation was made by the Director of Sera Fortuno Prison.
“One of my aims as Minister of Justice is to ensure that their human rights are protected and that we think differently about individuals behind bars. We have to prepare them to come back into our families and society with new and better skills to make a positive contribution,” said Minister De Weever.
