Tabernacle, St. Kitts, March 10 2018 – The three persons who were murdered within a 12-hour period last week are from St. Christopher 7, whose Parliamentary Representative is Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris.
The Finch sisters – 19-year-old Naomi and 20-year-old Jimmyliah, were strangled and partially decapitated partially on the seashore in Keys Village on March 1 and hours later 26-year-old Mikelton Tyson of Phillips’ Village was shot to death.
A cabinet statement issued on March 8 made only a terse reference to the murders of the Finch sisters. No mention was made of the killing of Tyson.
The death announcements of the Finch sisters on radio indicate they were from Tabernacle, the same village as Harris, but resided at Keys Village. Tyson was a resident of Phillips’ Village, a part of St. Christopher 7.
Two of the 23 murder victims in 2017 were also residents of Dr. Harris’ constituency.
31-year-old Darnell Govia of Phillips’ Village was shot and killed at the J.N. France General Hospital in Basseterre on June 24 and 26-year-old Kishorne “Duppy” Edwards was shot and killed in his vehicle in Ottley’s Village, St. Kitts on July 4.
Noticeable is the stunning silence of the religious bodies and the other non-governmental organisations to the gruesome murders of the Finch sisters and Tyson last week as well as other violent crimes, armed robberies, the unethical herpes vaccine and stem cells trials and the rampant corruption, nepotism and cronyism in government.
With increasing incidents of home invasions, armed robberies and murders in which several businessmen, women and teenagers have been killed, the St. Kitts and Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the St. Kitts and Nevis Bar Association, the St. Kitts Business Forum, the St. Kitts Christian Council, the St. Kitts Evangelical Association, the Nevis Christian Council, the Nevis Christian Council, the Nevis Teachers Union and the St. Kitts Teachers Union have all remained silent.
The record shows there has been no statement from civil society on the murders, armed robberies or serious incidents over the past three years.
The kidnapping and gruesome murder of 17-year-old Leanna Napoleon, whose body was found in a shallow grave last year and last week’s horrifying double murder of the Finch sisters and the shooting death of Tyson within a 12-hour period have failed to stir the consciences of civil society.
The Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis has recorded five murders for the year. The nation still awaits the final determination of the death of 23-year-old Shaquille Pemberton, whose body was found in the bushes Gillard Meadows, St. Kitts on January 27.
St. Kitts and Nevis recorded 82 murders in the last three years.
