SUCKERGARDEN, Sint Maarten — Back in December 1663 on Boxing Day the tradition was for employers to give their employees a box to take home containing gifts, bonuses, and sometimes leftover food. It was a gesture for employers to show their appreciation towards their employees.
Supporting such historic tradition of appreciation, The Keys Market becomes more than a place to buy food and trinkets on 26 Dec.18. From 8.00am until 4.00pm the market turns into a place where you enjoy the Christmas spirit, where you can find the perfect gifts for friends and family, and spend time with those you love. Besides celebrating Boxing Day, The Keys Market campaigns to encourage the people of St. Maarten to “Love Your Local Market”.
Those who remember the old market days in Philipsburg and Marigot, market shopping is great fun and can be a refreshing alternative to the usual trip to the supermarket. Located at Kings of The Sea Drive in Sucker Garden, you will find (used) clothing, furniture, household items, crafts, toys, food, bakes, self-made beverages, local produce, parking and much more at the Flea-Xmas-Market. The market site is built with recycled and repurposed materials.
It’s our intention to inspire and encourage visitors to reuse, recycle and repurpose waste says management of The Keys Market. Furthermore the market is an opportunity to support each other, it promotes the togetherness of the multi-SXM-culture and it creates business opportunities and jobs. Those who want to participate as a street Vendor on 26 December’18 are welcome to join.
