Hon.Niklos Gitterson, Ministry of Public Housing, Environment, Spatial Development and Infrastructure (Ministry VROMI)

GREAT BAY, Sint Maarten (DCOMM) – Ministry of Public Housing, Environment, Spatial Development and Infrastructure (Ministry VROMI), is taking preventative measures to prevent the so-called Irma Landfill from re-igniting due to the dry weather season which is creating immense heat.

Sewage trucks with reclaimed water are being used for this fire-fighting preventive measure. The reclaimed water is poured over the landfill to keep it cool.

Effluent is used in other countries for many non-potable applications described as beneficial consumptive use of the water, including structural and non-structural fire-fighting, irrigation, cooling towers, etc.

The main objective of the Ministry VROMI approach is to prevent a fire from erupting as the Ministry and other stakeholders work diligently towards a structural solution.
