DUBAI — Dr Ram Buxani, 74, a resident of Dubai for over 56 years, has been conferred an honorary D.Litt. degree by DY Patil University, in Mumbai last week.

On conferring the degree, Dr Sanjay Oak, Vice-Chancellor, DY Patil University, told Gulf News, “We looked at the contributions made by him to not just the industry but also in the social field. It has been our custom to confer this degree on people from the field of science, engineering and arts who have gone beyond their call of duty and made valuable contributions to society.” The degree is above the level of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

Buxani is a well-known figure in Dubai, having come to the UAE at the age of 18 and has witnessed the formative years of the city and its growth to its present-day international status.

Apart from heading the 60-year-old ITL Cosmos Group, Buxani has been closely involved with the growth of educational institutions in the emirates. He was the chairman of Indian High School from 2000-2004, when he brought about significant changes in the outlook of the school which became the first Indian school to receive the Shaikh Hamdan Award. He has also been a board member of Al Noor Training Centre for Children with Special Needs in Dubai as well as the Chinmaya International Residential School, Coimbatore.

As the founder of the Overseas Indian Economic Forum, he is proud that this body subsequently paved the way for many business councils. It was due to his efforts that the estate duty in India was abolished in the year 1985.

Buxani received a PhD for his thesis on “Governance of Dubai: The influence of tribal tradition in decision making, especially in the critical period of the development of the city-state” in 2004. His autobiography Taking the High Road(2003) has been translated into several Indian languages and soon an Arabic and Malayalam version is to be launched.
