One dead, four injured in road accidents

PARAMARIBO — A man is dead and a woman is in the hospital following two separate, unrelated accidents Thursday afternoon, police have reported.

Dead is 50-year-old Ramlochansing Merai. The police PR department reported that the man was riding his motorcycle in Van Drimmelenpolder in District Nickerie Thursday afternoon, when he was mowed down by a car.

He was transported to the hospital in the district, where he succumbed to his injuries Thursday night.

Merai is the fifth motorbike rider to die in traffic this year. In total traffic claimed 17 lives so far.

The victims in the other major accident Thursday afternoon all escaped with their lives. According to police a 37-year-old woman was driving with her three children in Houttuin in District Wanica, when she smashed her car into a wall.

The children –two daughters aged 15 and 19, and an 18-year-old son- were treated at the hospital, but allowed to leave afterward. The mother was kept overnight. Police say it is not clear what caused the woman to drive into the wall.
