Deadline for applicants is June 25, 2015!
Great Bay, St. Maarten – For the upcoming St. Martin Emancipation Day festivities, the Africa Caribbean Heritage Alliance (ACHA) in collaboration with the Department of Culture and VOICES Foundation will be hosting a poetry competition. The deadline for all entries is June 25, 2015. Students are especially encouraged to take part in this competition.
Under the theme, “Africa in Me”, contestants have the opportunity to creatively express themselves while exploring St. Martin’s heritage as it relates to Africa and its current relationship with Africa. By doing so, this competition aims to bring more awareness to Africa and highlight the similarities between Africa and the Caribbean.
Poets and spoken word enthusiasts get to express the historical and present-day relationship which exists between Africa and the Caribbean. One way to do so is to artistically answer such questions as what would you like to experience from Africa? What do you find interesting about Africa? What does the Caribbean have in common with Africa? Matters such as tourism, business opportunities, historical links, fashion, and entertainment, to name a few can all be reflected in the entries.
Winners of the competition will be announced during the Emancipation Day festivities on July 1, 2015 and will also be featured in ACHA’s upcoming projects in the Caribbean and in Africa. In addition, all winning entries will be available at the Africa Resource Center at the Philipsburg Jubilee Library.
