PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten – Prime Minister Hon. Marcel Gumbs attended the oath-taking ceremony at the Governor’s Cabinet on Friday for the first-Sint Maarten born Cardiologist Emiko Bird-Lake.

In the presence of her mother, Veronica Lake, and the husband of Emiko Bird-Lake, the oath was administered by Acting Governor His Excellency Reynold Groeneveldt.

Cardiologist Bird-Lake is part of a specialist rotational program established by St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) with the Netherlands, and will be on the island providing services to SMMC patients for a one-month period.

“I am very proud of Emiko Bird-Lake, being the first born Sint Maartener Cardiologist of the country.  She is a role model for our young people.  Hard work and determination will allow you to achieve what you set out in life.

“As Acting Minister of Public Health, it was a great opportunity to be present to witness this proud moment on behalf of the Council of Ministers and the people of Sint Maarten.  I take this opportunity to congratulate her parents, husband and her family circle on this great achievement,” Prime Minister Hon. Marcel Gumbs said on Sunday.

Acting Governor His Excellency Reynold Groeneveldt stated on Sunday: “This is a very proud moment for the entire Sint Maarten community.  I have administered the oath on several occasions before, but it was the first to a local born Cardiologist.  It gave me a lot of pride.

“Mrs. Bird-Lake should be looked at as a role model for our young people to follow and aim to achieve by reaching for the stars.  Put your mind to become something and make it meaningful,” Acting Governor His Excellency Reynold Groeneveldt said on Sunday.
